Petition-"To the Public" 1839

The violence in, and around, Caldwell County in 1838-9 is commonly referred to the Mormon War. During this conflict property was confiscated, homes were destroyed and lives were lost on both sides. Individual petitions of protest to the governor of Missouri abound. http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/mormon.asp

The Mormon leadership petitioned the Governor of Missouri who was sympathetic to the group but offered no promise of military help. Finally in 1839, a delegation of Mormon leaders traveled to Washington DC to petition President Martin Van Buren for aid. It is said he replied, "your cause is just, but I can do nothing for you."
